How to make it

  • In a large kettle, gently brown one diced onion in bacon drippings. Then add red cabbage, cut in 1/3 inch slices and stir fry.
  • Add the cooking apple, peeled and cut up.
  • Add the vinegar, sugar, and water, simmer until cabbage is tender with the lid on the pan, approximately 1 hours.

    This is probally the closest to our mother's
    SHE MADE THE BEST SOUR BRATTEN/DUMPLINGS/RED CABBAGE !!!!! Sadly for my sister and I we never wrote any of them down !! Our mother never measured. (A pinsh of this a handful of that !!!
