How to make it

  • For crust, combine graham cracker crumbs with sugar, and then add melted butter until well moistened.
  • Press into bottom of 10 inch deep dish pie plate.
  • Bake crust at 350 degrees for 8 minutes.
  • Remove crust from oven and cool completely before filling.
  • For filling, combine both pudding mixes with milk, using an electric mixer.
  • Add softened ice cream and beat into pudding mixture.
  • Pour filling into cooled graham cracker crust.
  • Spread cool whip over filling.
  • With a potato peeler, run blade down the side of chocolate bar to create chocolate shavings/curls for top of pie - you will not need to shave the whole candy bar, just enough “curls” to use as a nice garnish for the top.
  • Cover pie and chill several hours before servings.
  • Keep leftovers refrigerated.

This recipe is a good start. I made it as called for, but I had this pie at Bishop's dozens of times and I remember it being lighter, fluffier and more chocolately. When I try it again, I will use two chocolate fudge pudding mixes and French vanilla ice cream. I will try beating it longer as well. Baking the crust wasn't necessary and just made it hard to cut. I like a crust that is solid enough to serve but crumbles and mixes with the filling as you cut it with a fork. I'm not a fan of Cool Whip, either. There is an easy recipe for stabilized whipped cream at It holds up great!
Nevertheless, thanks for posting the recipe, krumkake. :)

As a cornhusker by birth, I wish I'd had this pie while in the state. It sounds yummy! I want to get this Nebraska Community cookbook you said it came from, where did you purchase it?

Krummie -- only from you would I use Cool Whip rather than "real" whipped cream!! I have to admit to planning to make this but will substitute sweetened whipped cream for the Cool Whip. As long as it will be chilled prior to serving that should work OK, yes?
