Traditional Cape Koeksisters Recipe

Ingredients
  • 4 cups cake flour
  • 250g potatoes
  • 90g soft butter
  • 1/4cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 10g(1sachet) instant yeast
  • 20ml mixed spice
  • 20ml fine ginger powder
  • 20ml fine cinnamon powder
  • 15ml grated naartjie peel(optional)
  • 1 cup lukewarm milk
  • oil for deep frying
  • dessicated coconut
  • syrup ingredients:-
  • 2&1/2 cups sugar
  • 1&1/2 cups water

Directions
  1. peel potatoes,boil in water until soft , drain & mash until smooth
  2. beat eggs slightly & mix with butter
  3. sift flour, mixed spice,salt, ginger,cinnamon& naartjie peel(optional) together ,add sugar& instant yeast
  4. add egg mixture to mashed potato add warm milk
  5. add to dry ingredients
  6. make a soft dough
  7. knead for +- 10 minutes
  8. leave dough covered in dish in warm place to rise until double +- 2hrs
  9. shape into 36-40 balls elongating slightly
  10. place on greased sheet let rise for another +- 1/2 hr
  11. fry koeksisters on medium heat in deep oil turn to brown evenly
  12. drain on absorbant paper
  13. make syrup by boiling sugar with water under 10 mins
  14. stir in hot syrup
  15. hot tip;
  16. fry koeksisters ,store stir in hot syrup before serving
  17. roll in dessicated coconut
  18. enjoy with your favourate cup of coffee or tea

My mom called these potato nuts... so good, the potatoes are the secret!! Great post!


These sound very good. I want to try and make them soon! I could use a warm cup of coffee and a few of these..the temp. is -8 this morning.

Magali, I see you havent had a response. Naartjie is a citrus fruit which can be substituted with tangerine or maybe clementine. Ronnymarcus, I'm sure that those will be following in the near future. I'm working on "poffadder" at the moment
