How to make it

  • Steam rice as usual either on a stove top or in a steamer, I used a steamer.
  • Fluff rice, and add vinegar, salt, and the seasonings of your choice. You can also add curry powder or Miso paste.
  • I used a mold for my onigiri, shown here: http://www.cookingcute.com/onigiri_with_filling.htm
  • However it can also be molded by hand, but it must be down while hot or it wont stick together as well. Any shape will do, I used triangles.
  • Heat sesame oil in a pan and lightly fry Onigiri until golden on each side.

    Wow! I never met anyone in the states here who liked onigiri. I've been making them by hand for years, and usually stuff them with umeboshi or salmon/mayo. But I can't wait to try it this way. I usually like to wrap the whole think with the nori. Arigato!

    This was the closest photo I could find, it does wrap around the bottom, and considering the fact that nori is already toasted you don't need to fry it. But you can if you want. Give it a try and see how you like it!

    The photo has nori wrapped around the base but it's not mentioned in the recipe. Do you add the nori before frying? Is it only a strip around the edges or does it cover the bottom as well?
