How to make it

  • Stir together chopped nuts, cinnamon and sugar. set aside
  • Brush the bottom of a 15x10x1 baking pan with some of the butter
  • Unfold fillo dough (keep remaining dough covered with plastic wrap and a damp towel, removing sheets as you need them)
  • Layer 5 sheets, brushing each sheet with the butter
  • Sprinkle 1-1/2 cups of nut mixture on the 5th layer (after the butter)
  • Repeat this process 2 more times
  • Drizzle any remaning butter on the top
  • Trim edges of dough to fit pan and clean up edges
  • Use a sharp knife to cut thrugh all layers into about 60 diamond shaped pieces
  • Bake at 325* for about 35-45 minutes or until golden brown
  • While cooking make the syrup on the stove.
  • Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to boil
  • Reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes
  • remove cinnamon stick
  • Pour mixture ver backlava immedietly after removing from oven
  • Cool completly to allow syrup to be absorbed by backlava
  • Try to wait at least an hour and then enjoy!
