Baklava Recipe
This is a flavorful and less sickening-sweet backlava. I took a class to learn how to make this and was suprised at how easy it was! The recipe calls for 60 pieces, but you can make them as large or small as you would like.

Ingredients
  • 1 1/4 c. melted butter
  • 16oz pkg fillo dough, thawed
  • Filling:
  • 4 c. finely chopped walnuts or pistachios
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1-1/2t cinnamon
  • Syrup:
  • 1-1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 c. water
  • 1/4 c. honey
  • 3" stick of cinnamon
  • 2T lemon juice

Directions
  1. Stir together chopped nuts, cinnamon and sugar. set aside
  2. Brush the bottom of a 15x10x1 baking pan with some of the butter
  3. Unfold fillo dough (keep remaining dough covered with plastic wrap and a damp towel, removing sheets as you need them)
  4. Layer 5 sheets, brushing each sheet with the butter
  5. Sprinkle 1-1/2 cups of nut mixture on the 5th layer (after the butter)
  6. Repeat this process 2 more times
  7. Drizzle any remaning butter on the top
  8. Trim edges of dough to fit pan and clean up edges
  9. Use a sharp knife to cut thrugh all layers into about 60 diamond shaped pieces
  10. Bake at 325* for about 35-45 minutes or until golden brown
  11. While cooking make the syrup on the stove.
  12. Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to boil
  13. Reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes
  14. remove cinnamon stick
  15. Pour mixture ver backlava immedietly after removing from oven
  16. Cool completly to allow syrup to be absorbed by backlava
  17. Try to wait at least an hour and then enjoy!
