Ingredients

How to make it

  • Add split peas in a pot and cover with water (you can soak the split peas for a few hours prior to cooking, but it's not necessary - unless you want to lower your actual cooking time). 1 cup of split peas might need about 3 cups of water. You can always add more later, depending on how thick you want the dhal to be.
  • Add salt, garlic and pepper and let it come to a boil on high heat.
  • Turn down the heat to medium-low and add tumeric.
  • Let cook for about 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. The extended time & heat will melt the garlic so it can be crushed easily.
  • Add salt to taste, and you're done!
  • I use a swizzle stick to stir because I like the split peas crushed almost completely... more like a thick soup. I'll add a picture of what a swizzle-stick looks like.

What the hey. I thought only old farts like me knew about swizzle sticks. They're thin five inch long plastic sticks for highballs. Thats what cocktails used to be called. (Before plastic they were glass.)
If you have a different stirring gizmo in mind that you call a swizzle stick it must have been invented by Miss Nomer.
I stir my split pea soup with a paint mixing rod on an electric drill. Smoooth soup.

I make this, but you know being a carnivore I have to throw ham or sausage in there. Thanks.
