This is an old tried and true recipe I created a few decades ago in my hippie dippie days. Tastes excellent with the yogurt recipe I also have posted. Change the granola ingredients around to suit you, remembering to keep the ratio of 7 dry to 1 li... More

Ingredients
  • 12 cups oats
  • 1 cup wheat germ
  • 2 cups unsalted nuts (I sub the nuts out for other goodies)
  • 2 cups sunflower seeds
  • 1 cup sesame seeds
  • 3 cups coconut, shredded
  • 1 1/2 cups honey
  • 1 1/2 cups oil (use a light oil like safflower)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 275 degrees. F
  2. Mix dry ingredients in a large baking pan (12 x 17-inch or comparable).
  3. Measure out the oil into a saucepan, then measure the honey in the same measuring cup and pour into saucepan. (The honey slides out of the cup easily.) Add vanilla extract and heat just to mix.
  4. Pour liquids over dry ingredients and mix well.
  5. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
  6. Let cool before storing. You can add 1 to 2 cups of raisins or other dried fruit at this point. This is wonderful as a cereal with milk OR yogurt. Makes a great snack and trail mix. Experiment with different ingredients; just remember to keep the ratio of 7 dry to 1 liquid.

Mmm...This is definitely going to get made this week.

Hope you enjoy it, kristopher. Make it your own with the ingredients you love!

Looks great,I must have a go at this

I will try this for sure. I love granola, yogurt and fruit for a quick snack at work. I think I will half it though....seems like a lot just for me.
Thanks!

LOL -- yes, it's a lot for one, Alana, but it goes quickly with a family.

This looks like one for the camping book. Thanks!

This sounds really good.... I was looking for more recipes from you...

I know what I will be buying tomorrow when I go shopping and I had better buy lots as the grandchildren will love this as well.

I just made this and it was delicious! My kids love it as well. Now I just need to put it into bar form to send to school as a snack!

Great !

Having been one myself, I can attest that there is nothing better then "old hippie recipes".
That reminds me, can I get your "brownie" recipe too?

Lol -- now, starbuck, that one is a secret recipe!

Great post!

This is SO good. Lots of flavor. I added 1 cup of ground flax seed, and decreased the coconut by a cup. Very good!

Great idea . . . this is just the basic recipe. As long as the wet/dry ratio is kept, you can alter it to your heart's desire!

I'm not a fan of coconut so I increased the nuts (sunflower seeds and soy nuts). Also, I added a tad more vanilla and a teaspoon of cinnamon which added a nice flavor. I went with raisins, dried cherries and dried papayas for my fruits. This stuff is awesome!! No more paying $3 a pound for granola for me!! = )

Great suggestions, serenityhound. I just made some this morning with my new range. I found it necessary to bake for 1 1/2 hours before it was toasted enough for my liking. It's also a bit humid today. Keep that in mind -- every oven is a little different and the weather can be a factor, too.

This is like mine except I add almonds, pumpkin and flax I also make bars like this
