Ingredients
  • 2-3 meaty and smoked ham hocks
  • 12 cups water
  • 1 pound hamburger
  • 1 Portuguese sausage, sliced or beef kielbasa
  • 1 15-ounce can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 8-ounce cans tomato sauce
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 4 stalks celery, chopped
  • 2 potatoes, diced
  • 1/2 head cabbage, shredded
  • 1/2 pound macaroni, boiled

Directions
  1. Boil the ham hocks in water for 2 hours (to get the smoky flavor into the broth.)
  2. Add hamburger and sausage, then beans, tomato sauce and carrots.
  3. Cook 10 minutes.
  4. Add onion, celery and potatoes; cook 20 minutes.
  5. Add remaining ingredients.
  6. Cook 10 more minutes.
  7. Season if needed with salt and pepper.

Looks good. I'll try it and see if it is "broke da mout" like my family at home makes.


Looks tasty and appears to be much like the bean soup my mom makes. She uses carrots instead of potatoes and leaves out the cabbage. I'm going to try your version.
