warm lettuce

this makes almost a meal out of 1/4 of an iceberg lettuce. i've had it once, about 45 years ago, in indiana and still like it.
Ingredients
- 1 iceberg lettuce shopping list
- 12 strips of bacon - or more shopping list
- vinegar, about 1/4 cup shopping list
- sugar, about 1 teaspon shopping list
- pepper, about 5 turns of the pepper mill shopping list
- salt (a pinch) shopping list
- chili flakes, if desired, a pinch shopping list
- water, about 1/2 cup shopping list
- about 2 TBSP oil, if bacon does not have enough fat shopping list
- or if you'd rather not eat the bacon fat and shopping list
- use vegetable oil instead shopping list
How to make it
- cut lettuce in quarters
- remove chunky bottom parts
- fry bacon in skillet
- remove bacon to paper towel
- dispose of some of bacon fat i fdesired
- add vinegar and water,
- stiring all the time, scraping pan
- add sugar, pepper, chili flakes,
- a pinch of salt, if required
- crumble bacon into bits,
- put back into skillet
- stir
- ladle hot dressing on lettuce
- serve immediately
