- 1 med. onion, minced shopping list
- 1 clove garlic, minced shopping list
- 1 lb. lean ground lamb (ground beef can be substituted) shopping list
- 2 T olive oil shopping list
- 1 t. salt shopping list
- 1/4 t. pepper shopping list
- 1 t. oregano shopping list
- 1 cup chopped tomato shopping list
- 1 cup tomato sauce shopping list
- 3/4 lb. elbow macaroni shopping list
- 3/4 C dry bread crumbs shopping list
- 1/4 C grated romano cheese shopping list
- CREAM SAUCE shopping list
- 4 T butter shopping list
- 6 T flour shopping list
- 2 1/4 C milk shopping list
- 1 t. salt shopping list
- 1/8 t. pepper shopping list
- 2 egg yolks beaten w/ 2 T milk shopping list
How to make it
- Saute onion, garlic, and lamb or beef in oil in a 2-quart saucepan 8-10 minutes. add salt, pepper, oregano tomatoes and tomato sauce. cover and simmer 30 minutes.
- preheat oven to 350 degrees
- cook macaroni according to package directions, rinse in cold water and drain.
- melt better in a saucepan blend in flour, slowly add 1 3/4 cups milk and heat, stirring constantly until very thick. blend in salt and pepper.
- off heat, measure 1 1/4 cups sauce into a bowl, beat in remaining 1/2 cup milk and set aside.
- mix 1/2 cup of the bread crumbs into the meat mixture. sprinkle remaining crumbs over the bottom of a greased 2 1/2 quart casserole.
- layer in half the macaroni, spread it with all the meat sauce, half the thin cream sauce and half the cheese. top with remaining macaroni and thin cream sauce.
- spread thick cream sauce over all, along with remaing cheese. bake, uncovered, 30 minutes, reduce heat to 325 and bake 10 minutes longer.
