Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups ice water
  • 1 1/2 cups non-fat dry milk powder
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 to 1 1/2 trays of ice cubes or 2-3 handfuls of ice cubes.
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable or corn oil
  • 5-second squirt of non-stick spray for emulsification purposes

Directions
  1. Place all of the ingredients in a blender, including the oil and non-stick spray.
  2. Use less water for thicker milk shakes and more for shakes that are easy on your blender motor.
  3. Blender should be about 3/4's full.
  4. Put on lid and process for 2 full minutes.
  5. Pour into glasses and serve.
  6. Makes 4, 12 oz servings.
  7. Variations:
  8. Add 1 tablespoon instant coffee for mocha shake.
  9. Add 1 very ripe banana for a chocolate banana shake.
  10. Add broken red/white candy mints for chocolate mint shake.
  11. Make vanilla shakes by omiting cocoa and reducing sugar to 1/2 cup and add 1 tablespoon vanilla flavoring. For Fench vanilla shake add one egg.
  12. The oil is what makes the milk shakes thick and creamy. If you leave it out you will end up with chocolate ice, which is good, but defeats the purpose of having a really good milk shake.
  13. (It is important to note that I did not create this recipe. I found it on the web at one of my favorite sites, which is www.hillbillyhousewife.com I like learning new ways of using dry milk instead of fresh. This is not a plug for her website, I just can not take credit for her recipe.)

Now this sounds really interesting. :)

Has a very good flavor. Used 1 1/2c water and the shake was still too soupy. Will try less water next time.

Yep! I've been reading over the hillbilly housewife site for a while now. While a bit extreme for my tastes, there are some good points to be taken from it. Using the powdered milk these days can surely save a few bits here and there! --Kn0x--
