How to make it

  • Combine molasses, baking soda and boiling water in large bowl...it foams up.
  • In separate bowl combine remaining ingredients. Mixture will be crumbly, save approx 2 tablespoons of crumbly mixture for topping.
  • Mix molasses mixture with crumbly mixture, just until incorporated.
  • Pour batter into round shallow cake pan, sprinkle with remaining crumbly mixture as topping.
  • Bake 350 degrees for approx 45 minutes.

I'm back! I've made this quite a few times now and it's still my favorite! Super chewy and delicious. It's easily confused with chocolate cake though so let people know it's not chocolate before they dig in!

My Grandmother made these years ago and I forgot what we needed for the dough. Thanks so much. Now I can make them up with my Granddaughter.

Fabulous texture. The moist, tender crumb is just perfect, and it's astonishingly quick and easy to make. I needed to use up some fresh ginger, so I grated it and mixed about 1/4 cup into the flour mixture. If you like ginger, give that variation a try. I'm going to go cut myself another piece.

Is that 1/2 C or 1 C of boiling water? Would love to try this sometime!
