Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 5 Royal Gala or Golden Delicious apples, peeled and cored
  • 2 Tbsp. melted butter
  • 2 Tbsp. brown sugar, packed.
  • *The brown sugar is sprinkled on top.

Directions
  1. Cream butter and sugar and add eggs.
  2. Beat until light and fluffy.
  3. Add vanilla.
  4. Stir in flour and salt to make a smooth dough.
  5. Spread into a buttered 13 X 9 inch dish or 10 or 11 inch buttered tart pan with removable bottom.
  6. Cut apples in half.
  7. Make 1/4 inch apart cuts in the apples but not all the way through, so the halves still hold together.
  8. Press the halves flat side down, making an attractive arrangement on the top of the batter.
  9. Brush apples with melted butter.
  10. Sprinkle with the brown sugar.
  11. If using a Pyrex dish, bake at 375 degrees F for 30-35 minutes but otherwise bake at 425 degrees F.
  12. Serve warm with French Vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream.
