If you think you have had good banana bread, wait until you try this recipe. The secret to good banana bread is using extra-ripe bananas(almost black).You can find those at the grocery store on sale!

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 1 1/2 cups white granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs(room temperature)
  • 2 or 3 small EXTRA RIPE bananas(at room temperature)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups all purpose plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk(room temperature)
  • (**if no buttermilk, use regular milk with a teaspoon of vinegar**)
  • 3/4 cup chopped toasted nuts(flour nuts so they don't sink to the bottom)

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Grease & flour cake pans or loaf pans. Line with wax paper.
  3. Use 2 - 9inch pans for (25 to 30 minutes)
  4. 1- 8 1/2 X 12 inch pan (30 minutes)
  5. 2 - loaf pans(30 - 45 minutes)
  6. Cream Crisco & sugar in mixer until light & fluffy.
  7. Add eggs beating well.
  8. Place bananas in a bowl with cinnamon and smash up real good.
  9. Add bananas, cinnamon & vanilla to mixing bowl ingredients.
  10. Sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together.
  11. Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, ending with flour.
  12. Fold in the nuts, mixing well
  13. Pour into pans and set in preheated oven.
  14. Bake loafs for about 30 - 45 minutes.
  15. Ovens vary.

Yep, that's the only way to get a good moist banana bread or cake, your bananas have to be very very ripe. I had a cousin that owned a bakery, but actually that was my mom's secret to her cakes and breads.


Bannanna bread is good and I will try this one


Everyone seems to have their own favorite banana bread recipe, mine doesn't have buttermilk in it so I am going to have to give this a try.


Buttermilk adds a nice tang and compliments the banana flavor....cream cheese on a slice....heaven. Thank you for a wonderful post
