How to make it

  • In large bowl put yeast sugar salt and water
  • Allow to sit til bubbly
  • mix butter and 4 cps flour til well combined
  • Add remaining flour and kneed until very elastic and shiny. If you have a bread machine you can do this part in it
  • Place in large greased bowl and allow to raise untill double in size (Up to two hours)
  • Punch down and devide into four pieces
  • Take three pieces and roll between hands until about 12 to 16 inches long
  • On greased baking sheet place three stips side by side. Begin braiding from the center to the ends. This will give you a nice even braid.
  • Take remaining pice and devide inot three equal pieces. Roll each piece into long thin strip. Braid these strips and place them around the large braid. This creates a beautiful, decorative loaf for special occasions. Allow to raise two double in size. Brush top with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake in a 350 degree oven about 30 minutes or til a beautiful golden brown and makes a hollow sound when you thump the top. If you prefer you can place this dough in loaf pans. It should make three standard loaves. Enjoy

I've never heard of challa before, but I like bread heaps. I'd be keen to try this out. I can hear the drummy sound on the crispy crust already.

Wow this is pretty easy! I thought challah was a difficult bread to make, that's why I never tried it. But you make it seem manageable. I do love sesame - it's one of my favourite flavours. Great post. I haven't made bread in a very long while but you make me feel like starting again lol Thanks for sharing.
