Homemade EASY Yogurt
From shirleyoma 15 years agoIngredients
- 1 quart milk ( I use Fat free) shopping list
- 1/4 cup plain unsweetened commercial yogurt with enzymes. Or pkg. of yogurt starter (as described with yogurt maker) shopping list
- 1 large Strainer (optional) shopping list
- 1 large Bowl (optional) shopping list
- 1 paper towel sheet. and one to cover the draining yogurt. (optional) shopping list
How to make it
- These are my Tried and True directions.
- Fill 1 qt. container (in the yogurt maker) with milk, pour one cup out of container into a two cup bowl or measuring cup. Place qt. container with the remaining 3 cups into microwave for 2 - 3 minutes.. do not boil.. just hot, below boiling point. Remove from microwave and set aside.
- Mix 1/4 cup commercial yogurt into the ONE cup cold yogurt and mix well (I use a fork). Slowly temper the cold milk with the hot milk, do not mix to quickly, when you have mixed about a cup of hot milk with the cold milk mixture, pour the colder mixture into the rest of the hot milk. now you should have all the milk/yogurt together. Place the container into the pre-warmed (plug the Y.Maker and warm while you are warming the milk in the Microwave) Yogurt Maker... within 4 hours your mild yogurt should be set, the longer you leave it, the tangier it gets.. I start mine in the morning and by evening it is tangy enough for me. I place the container into the Frig. over nite.. Next morning it is ready to eat. However, I like mine thicker so I place a large Strainer into a large bowl, place a large paper towel sheet inside the stainer and place the yogurt inside the paper toweled strainer, empty the liquid that is collected (drained) often.. Drain until thickness is desired. I also make creamed yogurt cheese this way, just keep draining (about 6 - 8 hrs) the liquid until desired consistency is reached.. love it!

Great post Shirley! I love home made yogurt. I have also made it in the oven with just the oven light on for a source of heat, but the yogurt maker is better. This is a healthy recipe too. Thanks!
