How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 400F/200C/gas Mark 5
  • Sift flour and salt into a large bowl
  • Make a well in the center and drop in the egg (crack it open, please!!!)
  • Add milk and mix into a smooth batter
  • Set aside for at least two hours
  • Filling:
  • Melt the lard or shortening in a fairly deep roasting pan (round or square, metal or ceramic) by placing it in the oven
  • While the lard is melting, wrap each sausage with a strip of bacon that has been spread with the mustard
  • Place sausages in the pan with the melted lard and cook for about 5 minutes
  • Remove the pan from the oven and turn the sausages
  • Pour batter over the sausages and bake for 25 minutes
  • Serve with English or spicy mustard and cooked green peas with carrot coins
