Figgy Recipe
This recipe is particularly good when made with raspberry wine. It comes from Cindy Renfrow's book, "Take a Thousand Eggs or More: A Collection of 15th Century Recipes".

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup dried black figs, stems removed*
  • 1 1/4 cups red wine
  • 1 slice stale bread
  • 1/4 cup seedless raisins
  • dash mace powder, or to taste
  • dash cinnamon powder, or to taste
  • pomegranate seeds for garnish
  • *Another time, try using half figs and half currants, and serving this with vanilla ice cream!

Directions
  1. "Figee. Nym figes, & boille hem in wyn, & bray hem in a morter withlied bred; tempre hit up with goud wyn/ boille it/ do therto good spicere, & hole resons/ dresse hit/ florisshe it aboue with pommegarnetes."
  2. Grind the bread to crumbs in a blender. Set aside.
  3. Put the figs and 3/4 cup red wine in an enamelled pot. Simmer gently over low heat until the figs are tender, about 5 minutes.
  4. Put the figs in a blender with some of the wine, and blend to paste.
  5. Pour the fig mixture back into the pot.
  6. Add breadcrumbs. Stir.
  7. Add 1/2 cup red wine. Stir.
  8. Add spices and raisins. Stir.
  9. Heat to boiling and stir until thickened to desired consistency.
  10. Pour the figgy into a fancy serving dish and garnish with pomegranate seeds.
  11. Serve warm.
  12. Makes 1 cup.

Wonderful, just love figs! I've ordered a fig tree to plant in a large pot as the winters here would kill it. Can't wait to see some results!! j
