Possibly the most delicious date squares I have ever tasted!

Ingredients
  • Base
  • 1 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 1 1/2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cups butter or margarine
  • Date Paste
  • 1 pound dried dates
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar (optional as dates are very sweet)
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Directions
  1. Pre-heat oven to 350 f.
  2. Place dates in a pot with sugar, orange juice and water over medium heat
  3. Cook and mash with a fork or potato masher until you get a paste
  4. Add vanilla and set aside to cool
  5. Mix all of the dry ingredients together and add butter or margarine
  6. With your hand combine everything until you get a crumbly mixture
  7. Split mixture in half and place in a 9x9 inch greased pan
  8. Press down slightly to create a crust
  9. Carefully place the date paste on top of the crust
  10. Loosely place the rest of the "crumbs" on top of the date paste but DO NOT press down on it to create a crust
  11. Place in the oven for 20 mins
  12. Let it cool before cutting
  13. Enjoy!
