Ingredients

How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 350' F.
  • grease bottom of an 8-inch square pan.
  • sift flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and the salt into a 3-quart bowl
  • add shortening, egg, and the evaportated milk to dry mixture
  • beat 3 minutes with electric beater at medium speed
  • scraping the sides of bowl often
  • add water and cherry syrup and beat hard for 1 minute.
  • stir in cut-up cherries
  • pour into prepared pan
  • bake at 350' on the center rack for 50 - 55 minutes or until cake pulls from sides of the pan
  • remove from oven. let stand 10 minutes before turning out to cool
  • Frost with your choice of frosting.

    My mother always made a cake similar to this only she also added banana. It was the hit with all of the relatives at every vacation. Thanks for the memory. :)

    This recipe sounds like it would make a nice cake to serve for the winter holidays or even sell in bake sales. I've used Pet Evap. Milk for years now and have never tried this recipe so it'll be fun to see how the cake comes out when I do make it! Thanks so much for sharing!
