Enjoyed at Shavout when the people who practice Judaism have made it a tradition to have dairy dishes. The word "blin" comes from Old Slavic mlin, that means "to mill", compare the Ukrainian word for blin млинець, mlynets’. They were traditionally prepared at the end of the winter to honor the rebirth of the new sun (Pancake week, in Russian Масленица). This tradition was adopted by the Orthodox church and is carried on to the present day. Bliny are also served at wakes, to commemorate the recently deceased. - 1 cup flour shopping list
- 1 1/2 cups milk or water shopping list
- 2 tablespoons oil shopping list
- 1/3 teaspoon salt shopping list
- 2 eggs shopping list
- FILLING: shopping list
- 16 oz. cottage cheese shopping list
- 2 egg yolks shopping list
- 2 tablespoons flour shopping list
- 2 tablespoons sugar shopping list
- 1 teaspoon vanilla shopping list
How to make it
- Mix ingredients together.
- Heat a thin coat of oil in a frying pan.
- Put a thin layer of batter into the pan, until golden brown. Flip over until the other side is golden brown.
- Filling options: sour creme, fruit jam, chocolate spread, date spread, etc.
- Roll into blintz and enjoy!
