How to make it

  • Sift flour, measure, and sift with baking powder, salt, and 1 tablespoon sugar.
  • Cut in shortening.
  • Add milk to form soft dough.
  • Turn onto lightly floured board.
  • Knead lightly.
  • Pat into a sheet 1/2 of an inch thick.
  • Spread with butter or substitute, and 2 tbsp. sugar dissolved in orange juice.
  • Sprinkle with grated orange rind.
  • Roll like a jelly roll and cut into slices 1/2 inch thick.
  • Place cut side down in well-oiled pan.
  • Cover and allow to stand for 10 minutes.
  • Bake in hot oven (450 degrees) for 15 minutes.
  • ENJOY!

    I tried these and am not sure I got it right. The dough was really soft and then as I tried to roll it it with the orange juice everything got mushed. I baked them anyway and the flavour was great but had a scone like texture. Was this right or have I made it all wrong? Would love some advice!

    Oh I can see how these would be worth the effort - I could probably do some pretty damage to a pan of these all by myself! Sound fantastic, and I really want to work on learning how to make my own breads/rolls - this sounds like a great place to start!
