How to make it

  • Melt the shortening in a large bowl in the microwave and cool it to room temperature.
  • Add the sugar, molasses and egg and beat well.
  • Sift together the dry ingredients and add, mixing well with a wooden spoon.
  • Wrap the dough in clear wrap and refrigerate a few hours or overnight.
  • Roll dough into 1" balls.
  • Place on lined or greased cookie sheets and bake in a preheated 375° oven 8-10 minutes or until browned but not crisp.
  • Allow to cool a couple minutes on the sheet before removing to a rack to completely cool.
  • Store in an airtight container.
  • Alternatively, for a chewy brownie-type bar, pat the dough evenly into a greased 13x9" pan and bake 20-25 minutes or until browned at the edges but still chewy. These will not keep quite as well but that's never been a problem at my house!

Well, this will be another addition to my holiday baking tray. We love molasses and these sound not only easy but decadent. Great post and a high five.
