How to make it

  • Bring first 5 ingredients to a boil in a heavy saucepan over medium heat (about 20 minutes), whisking contantly; boil, whisking constantly or until thickened.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Stir in butter and vanilla.
  • Place heavy duty plastic wrap directly on surface of custard to keep "skin" from forming.
  • Chill 2 hours

    I have chickens, and am always looking for ways to use their eggs. This custard is amazingly delicious. Took about a half hour standing in front of the stove stirring it. Turned out far better than I ever expected.

    Great and easy. I added some cinnamon and used blue agave instead of sugar. It only took about 10 minutes to thicken for me. I think I overcooked it a little expecting it to take 20 minutes. So watch out for that on your stove.

    I made this tonight and it is delicious!!! i was worried because i only had 2 eggs, so i just used 2 whole eggs, instead of 4 egg yolks. I also added some coconut syrup (DaVinci brand) along with the vanilla extract. As far as I can tell, It turned out PERFECTLY! I had to try a bit before i put it in the fridge, and it is amazing... cant wait till its done chilling, i can tell im going to need to buy some more eggs tomorrow and make another batch! :)

    This was a wonderful and easy custard. I made rice pudding. It was so easy I also used truvia instead of sugar and made a P-nutbutter custard pie that was equally wonderful. I will never buy a box pudding again.

    My grandma used to make custard pie which was my favorite. This sounds scrumptious! Will remind me of grandma:)

    I joined this site just to say how much I enjoyed this recipe. I'm lactose intolerant, so I used almond milk instead of regular milk (butter doesn't bother me for some reason). Nutty flavor adds just a touch of amazing. Thanks so much!!

    WOW !! Love it so much. I did not have whole milk so I made it with evaporated milk and added a bit of cinnamon too. Yumm.
    Never again will I ever buy box custard this stuff ROCKS....YAY.
