How to make it

  • Beat steaks with meat mallet or the edge of a plate to break down tissues.
  • Sprinkle with salt and pepper then brown the steaks in hot shortening and set aside.
  • In the same hot fat brown the onions adding more shortening if necessary.
  • Blend in the flour and add 2 cups hot water and season with salt, pepper and cayenne.
  • Add steaks to the gravy then add the Kitchen Bouquet and ketchup.
  • Cover pan and let simmer until tender.

    Sure. I'll adopt both of you. LOL. Vivian, you can use oil in place of shortening and any borwning liquid (liquid smoke) would do. You could also get by without it if you can't find a browning liquid. It's strictly for the smoke flavor. This is good without it. Enjoy.

    What are you doing to me Chef?
    I have just bookmarked nearly all today's recipes they all sound so delicious. This steak is definitely one for me.
    Do I have to use shortening of can I use oil? Also I know that Kitchen Bouquet is a browning/ seasoning sauce but we don't have it in uk so do you know an alternative?
