This is another great almost-from-scratch Southern favorite; the only thing keeping it from being totally scratch is the cake mix, and that doesn’t really count, does it? The cream cheese gives it a decadent, rich flavor. Read more A true Southern chess cake is almost a cross between a brownie and cheesecake, if you can imagine that. My best friend, Cindy, gets credit for the original ingredients ~ after she baked it for me the first time, I was addicted. I had to have the recipe. Ingredients
- Cake: shopping list
- The ingredients are simple, but don’t substitute. shopping list
- 1 box Duncan Hines butter yellow cake mix shopping list
- 1 egg shopping list
- 1 stick of butter (Don’t let it get TOO soft; it’ll make the mixture sticky and difficult to spread). shopping list
- Topping: shopping list
- 8 oz. cream cheese shopping list
- 1 box confectioner’s sugar shopping list
- 2 eggs (room temperature) shopping list
How to make it
- Preheat oven to 350.
- Cake:
- Mix all ingredients and press into a 9”x13” glass baking dish ~ will be crumbly.
- Topping:
- Mix all ingredients well ~ will have a batter-like consistency.
- Pour on top of cake mixture.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes. Cake is done when center begins to firm and edges have a slight brownie-like appearance. It’s perfect when it’s a very light golden brown. DON’T OVERCOOK! It will finish firming as it cools.
- Cool for at least 15 minutes on a cooling rack before cutting.
