How to make it

  • Soak beans overnight
  • Drain and pick out any funny-looking beans
  • Simmer beans, ham, broth, and 2 cups water for 1-2 hours
  • Add broth and water as needed
  • Remove the ham and let it cool
  • Chop ham and discard the bone
  • Return ham to the pot
  • Add potatoes, onion, carrots, and spices
  • Simmer 30 minutes
  • Add celery, milk, and flour/water mixture
  • Simmer another 30-45 minutes or until thickened

    This was great!!! Never cooked with dry beans before and now I don't think I can ever go back! Made the soup as written and just added a little crumbled bacon on top as garnish....delicious!

    Not crazy about winter,much,but like the soups that we consume during that time.
