Fannie Farkles Famous Sausage Subs

If you've ever walked through Gatlinburg, TN, you've been by Fannie Farkles. It's a great little arcade, with a kitchen at the front, were you can stand and watch them make Ogle Dogs (foot long corndogs, and the "Ogles" used to own everything in the city when I was a kid), and these Sausage Subs. Read more In summertime, the windows are open, and the fragrance of these subs is tremndous! I always walk up when fresh pile of veggies has been put on the grill, so, I have to go in and play skee ball and the poker machines until I'm sure the veggies have cooked down to the softness I like! LOL They don't share the recipe, I think this is pretty close. Keep in mind that they cook the sausages and veggies on the grill non-stop every day, so, the veggies get a lot of seasoning from that alone! And, their sausage subs and buns are footlong. I have never found footlong to buy at home, so, I always have enough for everyone to have 2 or 3! LOL See less
Ingredients
- 8 smoked sausages, like kielbasa, or Summer Sausage, bun size shopping list
- 8 buns shopping list
- 2 large onions, julienned shopping list
- 2 red peppers, julienned (they use green, but I like red) shopping list
- 1 tub fresh mushrooms, sliced shopping list
- 1 small can sliced black olives, draineed shopping list
- 1 large tomatoe, chopped (I add this) shopping list
- garlic infused oil (2T or so) shopping list
- butter shopping list
- spicy mustard, Mayo, dill or sweet relish, if desired shopping list
- Large grill / griddle pan shopping list
How to make it
- Heat griddle
- Toss veggies with a little garlic infused oil
- Melt a pad of butter or margarine on griddle and smear
- Add veggies
- Add sausages, next to veggies
- Turn veggies often, and cook to desired softness
- Spread bun open and place on griddle to heat
- Add a sausage on each bun and top with veggies
- Add condiments/relish if desired

A great story and a great recipe I love grilled veggies. This recipe and the story reminds me of Fennway Park sausage vendors outside the ball park.
You can smell the wonderful aroma for blocks.
