How to make it

  • In a dry pan heat the onion seeds and cumin seeds until the seeds begin to pop.
  • Add the chopped onion and the can of tomatoes and chiles.
  • Stir in the rest of the seasonings.
  • Add the drained chickpeas and stir.
  • Reduce the heat and simmer until the liquid reduces.
  • Remove from heat and add the cilantro.
  • Serve with rice and cucumber raita.
  • A great variation is to substitute a thawed 10 oz block of chopped spinach for one can of chick peas. We eat this variation as much as the original.
