How to make it

  • Stir together the warm water, yeast and sugar, set aside.
  • Sift the flour and salt together, set aside
  • Cream the shortening and egg until fluffy
  • Add the water mixture to the egg mixture and then add the flour mixture until combined
  • Knead the dough until smooth and elastic, 3 to 5 minutes - either by hand or in a stand mixer with a kneading hook
  • Put in an un-greased bowl, grease the top of the dough only, you can do this by spraying with Pam
  • Cover with a damp cloth and put in the refrigerator
  • Use when desired, by pinching off enough to form a ball about 1/2 the size of your fist - just make as many as you need at the time
  • Allow to rise for about 2 hours
  • Bake at 400 degrees for 1- to 15 minutes until golden
  • **I think the dough will last about 5 days in the refrigerator...but we've never not used it that long!

These were keepers my family said. That is really saying something because I have tried so many roll recipes looking for one that satisfied everyone. This was easy, conveinient, and stayed moist after baking and reheating. It makes a nice amount as well. This is great for beginner bakers too, thanks. Also, I thought they were nice looking rolls, not ugly at all. LOL

Yes, I believe I have that recipe from back in the 70's...sooooo good, and way too convenient! You are so right, debzy, in that the dough never lasts 5 days in the fridge...more like 5 minutes!! Hot bread from the oven - delish...Krum
