Sweet N Sour Seitan Recipe

Sweet N Sour Seitan Recipe
Add Step-by-Step Photos

Chunks of crispy, fried seitan and veggies smothered in a tangy sweet and sour sauce. Feel free to mix in some fresh, lightly sauteed veggies. I like to eat mine served over brown rice or over greens and use the sauce lightly as a dressing!

Ingredients
  • Seitan:
  • 1 pk traditional seitan (wheat gluten), cut into bite sized chunks
  • 1.5 c flour
  • 1/2 c water
  • 1/4 c nutritional yeast
  • 1/4 c hoisin sauce (honey and anchovie free)
  • 2 tbsp baking powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying
  • ****************************************
  • Sweet n Sour Sauce:
  • 1/3 c white vinegar
  • 1/3 c brown sugar
  • 1/4 c ketchup
  • 2 tsp cornstarch mixed with 4 tsp cold water
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne
  • Crush pineapple tidbits (optional)

Directions
  1. For the seitan:
  2. Mix flour, baking powder, nutritional yeast, and salt or pepper in average bowl.
  3. In separate bowl, mix water and hoisin sauce until blended. Coat seitan pieces in hoisin sauce mixture.**
  4. Coat seitan (having already been in hoisin sauce mixture) with flour mixture.
  5. Cook seitan in oil over med-high in large skillet. Turn pieces after a couple minutes or when golden brown.
  6. When done, remove pieces from oil and drain on paper towel.
  7. **You could simply use water, terryaki sauce, or veggie broth, or even other sauces (I like mustard, bbq, or ketchup) depending on the flavor you want the seitan to have.
  8. For the sauce:
  9. Mix together all ingredients except pineapple (if using) and cornstarch/water and bring to a boil in a small pot.
  10. Add cornstarch and water mixture and stir until sauce reaches desired thickness. Remember, it will further thicken once it cools.
  11. Add pineapple (or whatever else you may like).

This looks yummy and I will admit, I have never heard of seitan/wheat gluten. I'm sure it's a great substitute for those who cannnot eat Soy curd. Thank you for the recipe! Cheers!!!

I love seitan - thanks so much for posting! :)

That is a very appetizing photo. I have never tried wheat gluten but now I will with this recipe.

I just saved this..and am headed to look at more of your recipes...they look tasty!! : )

I made the sweet & sour sauce to go with some fried tofu I made. It was quite good, but I found it to be too vinegary. I think I will try making this with 1/3rd the vinegar and replace the other 2/3rds with pineapple juice.
