Sweet N Sour Seitan

- Seitan: shopping list
- 1 pk traditional seitan (wheat gluten), cut into bite sized chunks shopping list
- 1.5 c flour shopping list
- 1/2 c water shopping list
- 1/4 c nutritional yeast shopping list
- 1/4 c hoisin sauce (honey and anchovie free) shopping list
- 2 tbsp baking powder shopping list
- salt and pepper to taste shopping list
- oil for frying shopping list

- 1/3 c white vinegar shopping list
- 1/3 c brown sugar shopping list
- 1/4 c ketchup shopping list
- 2 tsp cornstarch mixed with 4 tsp cold water shopping list
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger shopping list
- 1/2 tsp cayenne shopping list
- crush pineapple tidbits (optional) shopping list
How to make it
- For the seitan:
- Mix flour, baking powder, nutritional yeast, and salt or pepper in average bowl.
- In separate bowl, mix water and hoisin sauce until blended. Coat seitan pieces in hoisin sauce mixture.**
- Coat seitan (having already been in hoisin sauce mixture) with flour mixture.
- Cook seitan in oil over med-high in large skillet. Turn pieces after a couple minutes or when golden brown.
- When done, remove pieces from oil and drain on paper towel.
- **You could simply use water, terryaki sauce, or veggie broth, or even other sauces (I like mustard, bbq, or ketchup) depending on the flavor you want the seitan to have.
- For the sauce:
- Mix together all ingredients except pineapple (if using) and cornstarch/water and bring to a boil in a small pot.
- Add cornstarch and water mixture and stir until sauce reaches desired thickness. Remember, it will further thicken once it cools.
- Add pineapple (or whatever else you may like).

I made the sweet & sour sauce to go with some fried tofu I made. It was quite good, but I found it to be too vinegary. I think I will try making this with 1/3rd the vinegar and replace the other 2/3rds with pineapple juice.
