Karahi Masala Koftay Or Meatballs Curry

- Meatballs: shopping list
- 1 kg. ground beef/mutton shopping list
- 4 tbsp roasted chickpeas / gram flour shopping list
- 1 tbsp desicated coconut shopping list
- 1 tsp poppy seeds shopping list
- 1/2 tsp garam masala shopping list
- 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste shopping list
- 1 tbsp salt shopping list
- 1 tbsp red chillies powder shopping list
- Pinch of nigella seeds,optional shopping list
- 1 tbsp coriander seeds,crushed shopping list
- 1 medium onion,finely chopped shopping list
- 4 tbsp mint/fresh coriander leaves,chopped shopping list
- 2-3 green chillies,finely chopped shopping list
- GRAVY: shopping list
- 1/2 cup oil shopping list
- 250 gm. onions,thinly sliced shopping list
- 300 gm. tomatoes,chopped shopping list
- 1/2 cup / 125 gm. yogurt shopping list
- 1 tsp cumin seeds shopping list
- 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste shopping list
- 4-6 black pepper,whole shopping list
- 4-5 cloves shopping list
- 1 large cardamom shopping list
- 1 inch piece cinnamon stick shopping list
- 2 tbsp crushed coriander seeds shopping list
- 1 1/2 to 2 tbsp crushed red chillies shopping list
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder shopping list
- pinch of nigella seeds shopping list
- salt,to taste shopping list
- 1/2 tsp garam masala powder shopping list
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg & mace powder shopping list
- 2 tbsp green coriander leaves,chopped shopping list
How to make it
- Grind chickpeas,coconut and poppy seeds to a fine powder.
- Combine all ingredients of meatballs in a large bowl.
- Mix well and let stand 1/2 an hour to blend flavours.
- Mean while,heat oil in a large pan/wok.Fry sliced onion in oil at medium heat till light brown.
- Remove from oil and drain on absorbent paper.
- Put tomatoes,yogurt,cumin seeds and fried onions in a blender and blend to a smooth paste.
- Reheat the oil in the pan.Add ginger garlic paste,black pepper,cloves,cardamom,cinnamon stick and fry for 30 seconds,then add the above paste.
- Add crushed coriander seeds,crushed red chillies,turmeric powder,nigella seeds and salt.
- Cook,covered,on medium heat till water dries and the sides leave oil.
- Mean while,prepare meatballs.With wet hands,shape mixture into medium sized balls.
- When gravy is ready,add the prepared meatballs in a single layer.
- Cook on low heat,moving the pan occasionally for 15-20 minutes or until meatballs are done.
- Add little water,if the gravy is very thick and bring to a boil.
- Remove from heat.Sprinkle garam masala,nutmeg & mace powder.Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
- Serve hot with Naan/Chappati.
