How to make it

  • For Crust: Mix the milk, cornmeal, butter and salt; cook until thick. Stir constantly so not to form any lumps. Set aside.
  • Brown hamburger and onion.
  • Add tomatoes, sauce, corn, green pepper and seasonings and cook for about 20 minutes.
  • Allow to cool slightly.
  • Pour half of the corn meal mush into a well greased 8 x 12 inch baking dish or large casserole.
  • Sprinkle 1/2 cup of the cheese on top of the corn meal mush.
  • Pour the meat sauce ontop of the cheese.
  • Sprinkle the remainder 1/2 cup of cheese ontop of the meat mixture. Then the remainder of the cornmeal mush to finish off the top of the casserole.
  • Bake until top is browned at 350 degrees, about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
