CHOCOLATE CINNAMON BUNS This recipe came from an estate sale. I obtained it when I purchased the family collection from the Elmhurst Estate in Heath, Texas in 1981.

Ingredients
  • 2-1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 2-1/8 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter softened
  • 1-1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/3 cup chopped nuts

Directions
  1. Grease a square baking pan generously with butter.
  2. In a small bowl dissolve yeast and 1 tablespoon sugar in the warm water.
  3. In large mixing bowl combine shortening, salt, 3 tablespoons sugar, egg, cocoa and 1 cup flour.
  4. Beat mixture until smooth then stir in remaining flour to form stiff dough.
  5. Place dough in well greased bowl then cover bowl with plastic wrap and let rise in warm place.
  6. When doubled punch dough down and on a lightly floured surface roll dough into rectangle.
  7. Spread with butter then combine sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over dough.
  8. Loosely roll up jelly roll style then moisten edges with water and press together to seal.
  9. Cut rolls into 1” wide slices then place slices in prepared pan.
  10. Cover with kitchen towel and let rise 1 hour then bake 25 minutes.
  11. Combine powdered sugar and milk then mix well and spoon glaze over warm rules.
  12. Sprinkle nuts over glaze and serve while warm.
