garlic press

Can anyone recommend a GOOD garlic press? I just hate the one I have, stuff gets stuck in it and it's difficult to clean. It came with the little thingy thing to clean out the holes but it still is a royal pain. Also one which incorporates a way to peel them as well would be awesome...anyone?

I quit using a garlic press for that very reason. I've gone to chopping in a little salt and consider it as exercise....LOL.

I'm with Notyo; more than often I chop (with or without salt) and I have a tiny Ulu knife (tiny -- but mighty! -- version of a mezaluna) that minces the garlic in no time...

I also have a garlic press that I use when I'm in a hurry -- it's very much like you described, JulieCake, but the garlic does not get stuck, and it's not overly difficult to clean. I THINK I got it at IKEA a while back, the stainless steel version. I do, however, tend to peel and halve the garlic cloves before I press them, or at the very least, smash the cloves with the side of a blunt knife before putting them in the press....It just makes the pressing easier.

For making Garlic mashed potatoes I roast a whole head of garlic. Then I pass the whole head through a potato ricer.Just remove the garlic skin in one big piece. Next I pass the cooked potatoes through and they clean out the garlic that is left behind. After that you can add any herbs, butter, olive oil , salt whatever and have fun

I llike potato skins on like a lot of you do. so this is what I do. After passing one potato through
a potato ricer. remove the skins and continue until all the potatoes have been processed in this fashion.
Next chop the skins ans sprinkle them with sea salt and drizzle a little olive oil over them.
Place them in the oven for ten minutes until they are crispy like bacon bits.
    Add to whipped potatoes.

I use this garlic press it is durable and easy to work:

    Zyliss Susi Garlic Press
If you're tired of wasting money on flimsy presses or ones that need a muscle man to exert enough pressure to squeeze the cloves, then check out the last garlic press you'll ever buy.

My original Zyliss Susi garlic press is more than 25 years old, and it's still going strong even after nearly daily usage and constant battering in my dishwasher and kitchen tool drawer. The bowl holds one to three cloves for pressing. Due to the leverage design, excessive force is not necessary to operate the tool, even without peeling the cloves first.

OXO also makes a good one!

I have been trying to find the one you keep in your fridge - you use it like a pepper mill - simply throw the garlic cloves in and place it in the fridge for safekeeping. Once you wish to use and add garlic - you simply turn it - and out comes from the bottom, minced garlic like you would get from a garlic press.

I've never found one I was truly happy with so I bring out the chef's knife. Cut off the root, give it a light whack with the side of the knife, peel the skin, one more heavy whack with the heel of your hand against the knife, throw on a little salt, mince and press with knife side to mush. A little work but great results.

Personally, I use a fine opening hand grater which makes short work of mincing, etc.

I use a regular simple hand press but it has one small feature added. it has a plastic cover with tiny spikes which fit into the holes and remove all the gaarlic which gets stuck in the holes. You can always use a toothpick to do the same thing
