Fried Green Tomatoes And Peppers

Recipe by Jgnat: Fried Green Tomatoes And Peppers/saved
    A good recipe with qualifications.
Did a homemade quark, which is a thickened strained buttermilk to make a soft unfermented cheese.
The dip is a touch on the salty side but when combined with the fried green tomatoes the saltiness goes away. So I'd cut back on the salt a little.
The bell peppers are on the crisp side. So if you like your peppers that way I guess it's all right. I prefer them a little softer.
Looks like the frying only serves purpose to brown up the breading.
The quark/egg mixture was a little thick so I added a little water for a thinner. Could be just because of my home made effort on quark. Have never seen it in the store or heard of it before. A little salt in the quark will give it some flavor and be good for straight up nibbling or as a chip dip.
Had to add again the cooking oil when it was used up.
Also had to add again the cornbread/flour breading.

Believe it's going to be close to the recipe for Cottage Cheese.

ML2C quark is a german cheese. It has no salt content and it is great to bake. I use it all the time.

I buy it at any supermarket really. Since I am living in London (UK) I bought it from Tesco and from Waitrose. In Portugal it was available at any supermaket. This information might not be very useful for you since you live in the US. If you find it MILRAM is the best brand.

I've never been brave enough to try fried green tomatoes. I keep thinking they would be bitter. Not sure if we have quark around here. I kinda doubt it.

Boy, it pays to check back! Quark is in the specialty dairy section in my supermarket here in Canada. I had no idea that it is hard to find elsewhere. The recipe for the dip I borrowed from used sour cream. I was watching my calories, so I switched it up.

Quark is not available in this area either. I'm still trying to come up with a homemade recipe. But this time of year the house temp is 63F which is too cool. Come summertime I'll try to refine a quark recipe to share with you all.
It can be had on the 'net for $13/8oz. Think it can be homemade for the price of a gallon of milk and a starter culture.
