    TREE CLIMBER

I loved to climb when I was young and I often would climb trees. At first would have to shimmy up those skinny birch trees all the way to the top and sway back and forth until eventually the flexible tree would bend all the way to the ground. Then I would let go and the birch would snap back into its upright position.

Later on I could get a running start and plant my foot at the base of an elm and jut myself upwards and grasp the lowest horizontal limb. Then I would wrap my leg around and pull myself up. Sometimes I would just sit on that first branch and stare up into the canopy above I would watch the birds and Squirrels hopping from branch to branch like circus animals under the Big Top.
As I got older I began to take more daring climb and I would stay for longer periods at a time just observing nature and taking it all in.

Dinner time at my home was at 5:00pm every night we were never late for dinner ever.
We all gathered around our dinning room table to enjoy a feast. I was usually the firs one home every nigh and usually helped out in the kitchen.

One afternoon I had the desire to climb the tree outside our front yard. I grabbed the lower limb and made my way to the very top where the branches were so thin that they would sway with the slightest breeze. As I looked downward I could observe all of the people walking by. Nobody knew I was looking at them. Sometimes a squirrel would be up high in the tree with me and made a racket and one of the passers by took a look up in that large Elm but he never saw me. How cool that I could see he but he could not see me. I stayed up in the canopy for hours changing my view by changing from branch to branch.

It started to get late and from my home I could hear the call, Michael come in now it is time to eat. I had an idea to wait and wait just a little longer. They called again and again, them my Dad formed a search party and sent my siblings to look in different directions. Another half hour went by and they still could not find me. They were gathered under me and discussed where I might be. I had to be still or they would discover me in the tree.
They went out and continued searching. I climbed down and snuck in the back door and went up stairs to my bedroom. Then I came down stairs like nothing happened. Where were you they asked didn’t you hear us calling for you. I told them I was in a deep sleep and heard nothing. Dinner is over they said and you will have only left overs.
They told me how frightened they were and gave me a hug, if the ever knew what I was doing for all that time I would have never heard the end of it.

Hi Trigger, it was so nice reading about your childhood story. I am sure that you will enjoy reading a book called "The Barron in the trees" by Italo Calvino. The way you told your story, reminded me of this enchanting book. If you have not read it yet, do search for it and let me know what you think.

I have been cooking many years. Probably longer then some of you have been alive and I still do most of my stuff from scratch. I like the taste much better and my house smells great. I like the idea of my grandchildren remembering the days they spent at grandma's house and all the goodies she had for them. I will share my stories with you later too.
