Bed And Bread Saturday

Chilly morning here, below the ice point. Spending the Lion's share of the day between the sheets. Toasted my nuts last night so I can make some Pecan Nut Bread today. Two whole cups should make a nutty quick bread. Eying some yeasted garlic bread and onion bread too.

Good Morning Points! 32F on my end. Your house will smell wonderful with all that bread making going on!
As I mentioned yesterday, the three of us are off to Watertown,NY this morning. I think it is about a two hour drive. It's supposed to be a nice sunny day so looking forward to it. We've heard there are good shopping deals to be found in Watertown. None of us are big shoppers but we thought we'd check it out just for fun. Our Hotel has a pool so we have that as a back up and there is also a Cider Mill and a Winery close by. Believe we are going to have dinner at an Italian restaurant this evening.
Time to go feed the birds. Have a great day everyone!

Good morning! Putting a tough old hen in the crockpot, to stew away. There is a big 100 year celebration downtown for our waterfront public parks. Dedication of a new sundial...lots of fun stuff. Chilly start at 56 and warming to low 70's. Windy, too. So this morning will be a walk in the park, literally.

Hen will probably become chicken and noodles or dumplings with peas and carrots. Comfort goodness in a bowl. Planning some investment cooking later, browning ground beef to package in 2 cup portions, making up some tomato sauce to freeze. Cookie dough to freeze in a log for slice and bake for my resident sweet eater.

Have fun at the Cider Mill, Janet. I know I would love that (Fred would be heading for the winery, if he could)

Points, your bread baking is inspirational. I might have to dust of the old Friendship bread starter and get my freezer full again. I haven't participated in the baking bunch at Church since last year and I'm itching to knead some dough, well, I always need "dough" but this time I'm talking bread. Cinnamon rolls are so tempting and the idea of rosemary focaccia haunts my dreams. Yep, I've been offiicially low carbing too long.

re: brussel sprouts with leeks and sausage...it works beautifully with BACON for the non-sausage fans. Has anyone tried oven roasted cauliflower, dressed in oil with salt and a pinch of red pepper? Not in flowerettes, but sliced? It is really really good and if you get dark crunchy bits all the better, it doesn't even resemble mushy steamed cauliflower and it is really good.

Hello to Luci, nice to meet you and welcome aboard as well as Brooke and Dahlia.
Hugs to all, I have truly missed our daily interaction.....Have a good one, dears.

    Points the bread sounds good.
Janet,I would love the trip you are taking. Have a great time and get pics.
Tina, putting the hen in the crockpot will be great no matter what you do with it. You always do great stuff.
I do my cauliflower that way and last night did the broccoli that way. Yummy!
Today we are off to Salem to see the 2 grandsons play a football playoff game and back to their house for a bit. Will be cold on the field. Will bring coffee.
Dinner will probably be meatball subs or leftover meatballs and spaghetti.
    Have a good day all!

Good Morning All......and welcome to ODD, Luci

Janet, so happy you enjoyed the chicken. A suggestion for leftovers would be to make sub sandwiches. Posting that recipe today.....Enjoy the day with your son.

Donna, nice to see you yesterday. Happy to hear it's just Brad being home and not that something was wrong.

Stir fry for us tonight....I always add linguine to mine rather than serve it over rice. Just a personal preference. Made a pie last night so we'll have that some time today too.

Having a big squabble with the resident crank about the house temperature. Controller's been sitting at 65 degrees for the past week and all of a sudden she's cold because she knows it's below freezing outside. It's all in her head.
Trying to get these loaves of bread going so I can turn the oven on and placate her mental block.

Good Morning Tina! Have fun at the Park! Love the term "Investment Cooking". Thats excellent! I hear you on the Rosemary Foccacia.
Hi Pat! Have a lovely time with your Grandsons! Meatball subs sound awesome.
Gonna be watching for your Sub Post Corinne. I also thought the meat would be lovely in a Quesadilla! It is so juicy and tender. I snuck a couple of teeny pieces this morning already....will there be any left? LOL! I should try a Stir Fry over Linguine as I'm really not a white rice fan. I like Jasmine rice, but I like that Linguine idea. What kind of pie did you make?
I think older people feel the cold a little differently. I know the older my Mom gets the easier she gets chilled and I know sometimes its the medication that they are on that also adds to that problem. Get that bread in the oven and that will help heat things up alright Points!

Good Morning all - well not the best Saturday morning it could be... One of my favorites things to do on Saturday morning is to watch Food Network and the Cooking Channel and guess what?? AT&T and Scripps are "fighting" over $$, so we've lost those channels, plus HGTV and a couple more. I'm so mad - what a stupid thing to do in this economy when people already pay WAY TOO MUCH for TV channels to begin with. Like either of the providers is short on cash - HA, yeah right! Sorry had to vent on that one! AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!
Points, Is that Pecan Nut Bread posted? Sounds so good, I have to make that!!
Janet - have a FAB time today!! You too, Pat! Enjoy your time with your families! :)
Hi, Tina! Yum, chicken & noodles or dumplings sounds so good! I'll be doing some "investment cooking" (like that term!) this weekend as well - makes thing so much easier during the week.
Hey, Wynne - Stir fry with linguine sounds really good. I've never tried that, but I'll bet we'd all like it...I'm making another note!!
Well, I'm off to have a COLD run so that I can get home and shower to get to my oldest son's basketball game, followed up by my younger son's basketball game!! Then the day is all mine - think I'll do some errands and grocery shopping and I suppose I'll figure something out for dinner. I'm thinking about smothered pork chops - I think I made that mental note the other day from what Tina was doing for dinner!
    Have a great day!!

    morning all,
Point I want some bread!! you already got me crazy with jealousy over the homeade Ice Cream! I emailed the ice cream maker hint to hubby.....lets see if he takes the bait my birthday is in 2 weeks.
Hear you on the freezing football game, I have to go sit at the soccer game and freeze everything before going to work at Macy's.
Frank's team is the equivilant of the Bad News Bears of Soccer. so he told them if they got a goal he would buy them pizza. lol whole season and they finally got a goal so he is taking the girls to Papa Gino's. good thing they have a $6.00 pizza deal going on.
My mom weighed herself she has lost 24 pounds, 10 on the liquid diet before the surgery and 14 since the surgery. ( she had gastric bypass).
Have a great day everyone I will pop back in tonight.

Here's the Pecan Nut Bread link: Pecan Nut Bread Only reason we make the nut bread is the nuts are free. Buying pecans in the store will put me under the poor house.
Three cups of blackberry juice run through a food mill is simmering on the stove so we'll have blackberry syrup to make ice cream. Probably could use it as syrup for pancakes but the decision is made for ice cream. It will spend a week in the fridge until I can get to the store for some heavy cream.
Pecan Nut Bread is just about ready to pop out of the oven then I'll think about getting the Onion Egg Bread dough put together.

Brooke, I love my food mill. That and a microplane are my two favorite kitchen gadgets.

    Onion Egg Bread Bread Machine
This is one terrific loaf of bread. My Pics on the recipe from the last time I made it.
Something happened this time though. Flavor's still there but the dough only rose once. Put it in the pan for the second rising. Started to rise and quit. Baked it anyway. Turned out dense. Hand kneaded it this time instead of making it in the food processor. Hmmmmmmm.....................
Bottom of loaf browned up but the top never did, even with extra time. I won't throw the recipe out, way to much flavor going on here.

Welcome to the ODDs, Luci. This is the best group on here!

Thanks Wynne, LOL but Brad being home IS "something wrong!" jk

Brooke, I hear ya on the cable cos. We're so pissed off at Comcast right now - they gave us a free month, but Brad says it's no consolation, he's dropping them 1st chance we get and going with Apple TV. I don't know what I'd do w/o HGTV or FoodNetwork!

Laurie, hope you didn't freeze too bad (I'm sure you're home by now) That's great on your mom's weight loss too!

My cheesy chicken cauliflower thingydo soup turned out really good last night - got some leftover - will probably eat it for lunch tomorrow. Hey,hey,hey.......Good evening everyone! Greetings from Watertown! I've had a most lovely day. We got a late start and didn't leave until noon, but we arrived by 2:30'ish. Found an adorable Mexican restaurant for lunch. Tico's I think it was called. And Ang....they served Chalupas!!!!!!! Never heard of them in my life until you were talking about them this past week...and...voila! Very tasty! Lots of fun! They served us salsa and nacho chips to start and I had a frozen Marguerhita. It was a bit on the swwet side. Then I had a sampler plate with a chalupa and quesadillas and a neat Mexican pizza that was reaaly ggod. Nice warm ambience, lots of colorful decorations and Mexican music playing. After lunch we walked over to the Flower Library. It is the most beautiful library I have ever seen in my life! It was amazing! We'd read about it before coming. I'll post pics next week. We checked into the hotel and it's lovely. Went to the mall for about two hours. Bought a couple of pairs of shoes. Jim didn't last long.....after all that driving and a big lunch, etc. We are back at the hotel now, letting Jim regain hIs strength with a cocktail before going out for dinner. I apologize for any typos this evening. i am using Benjamin's IPad and the keyboard is small. That's crazy that you lost your TV channels Brooke! What are smothered porkchops?
Hope you had agood day at Macy,s Laurie. Is your Mom still in the hospital or is she home recuperating?
Points...are your pecans free because you grow them? We don't have nut trees here. blackberry syrup....yummm....
I bought myself a foodmill at least a year ago Tina with the intention of making homemade tomato sauce but I've not even used it once. You'll have to tell me what I'm missing so I get it going! I have never had a collard. Is it like spinach?

Glad you had fun watching your Grandsons Pat. That's so great!

I also bought a can of mexicorn as I have a recipe that calls for that and I've never seen it in my grocery store before. And Corinne, I found chili peppers in adobo sauce no problem. Will do, Janet. The Apple TV cost $99 but it's yours and a one time buy. Our Comcast triple play (phone, internet, and tv) is around $175 each MONTH. With the Apple tv we can watch all kinds of shows and also found out how to stream from hulu with it. It'll be great I think. Gonna probably cut off the land line and just use cells. As far as internet, they get you on that. Around $70 a month. Sucks.
    That's cool on your finds!

I decided on just plain ol' meat sauce (spaghetti) over the squash in lieu of... I hope it flies. I did learn from my last "experiment" with the zucchini lasagna, he doesn't like surprises, so I'm letting him know in advance. LOL

Hello all, thanks for the well wishes for my mom. She is home, she only stayed in the hospital 3 days.
We had such a bad experience with Comcast that my husband wrote a letter to the President/CEO. It is a pretty funny read LOL. Now we have Verizon, which we don't have any issues with other than its expensive, but I think they all are. We have 6 tv's, one of which is HD and internet and phone from them and it runs $185 a month. Although Comcast keeps trying to woo us back I think it would take an act of god, their customer service is the WORST!
I love my bread machine, but I don't bake the bread in it. lol I think it comes out too heavy. I use it to make the dough and then cook it in the oven. I love it for pizza dough too.
I really would like a Kitchen Aid with the attachments, but it isn't in our budget.
Hubby just complained about by Ice Cream Maker request for my birthday. he says we sold one at a yard sale last year. NO, we sold one about 8 years ago at a yard sale that someone gave me, it was huge and didn't have any instructions.

Hey Kimmer, nice to see you. I've got kielbasa and red cabbage/apples on the menu for next week.

I do the smothered pork chops very close to your recipe, but I skip the cheese. We just do a dark onion gravy and let the chops cook until tender in all that oniony goodness. I don't use the onion soup mix, just chop a boat load of onions and mushrooms with a half of glass of dry sherry, a spoonful of dijon mustard and chicken broth. Let it simmer until it reduces to a nice gravy. I cook the onions til completely wilted and carmelized and then add them to the browned chops with the other goodies. It is so good with mashed potatoes or mashed parsnips.

Park was nice but crowded and Fred had a melt down. He is still sleeping. I have a big bowl of chicken and noodles for when he wakes up. He has been having issues all week and I think we need to rethink the meds again.

You had a bread maker disappear? Well, count me in on the missing equipment, how do you lose a pressure cooker, not just the whistle cap, but the whole doggone cooker? I simply can't find it anywhere. And the fish fryer basket is missing to the outdoor fryer? Sis called wanting to know if a deep fried turkey was in our future and I went to check on the fryolater and the basket is "GONE". Okay, chalk it up to CRAFT!!

Browned drained and packaged 5 lbs. of ground beef for tacos, sloppy joes, spaghetti sauce and such. Packed in flat bags in the deep freeze. 5 quarts of basic tomato gravy cooling. Will package when cool. !/2 the hen went into the chicken and noodles for dinner tonight. The other half is being supplemented with 2 breast pieces and will become white chicken chili (made with half of the soaked overnight navy beans). The remaining beans are going into a navy bean soup, Senate style, with ham hock, onions, garlic, and the usual suspects. The house smells heavenly, the aroma of garlic and onions are so soul satisfying.

Ran out of steam to make the cookie dough. Will shift gears and mix up a batch of cheaters biscotti in the a.m.

If I didn't have cable (Cooking Channel, HGTV, Comedy Central) I would have to curl up and cry. Fred would be so lost without his old movies and History channel. We've been thinking of a dish and dropping the land lines too. The phone rarely rings and it just bothers him with soliciters. Let me know how it works for you Donna.

Collards are similar to kale. They are dark green, sturdy and slightly bitter. Not nearly as bitter as mustard greens, but more assertive than spinach. I like them wilted with a smoked turkey neck, onions, garlic, and a touch of vinegar. They are rich in iron and are great with cornbread.

Good luck with the hominy. As a southern gal through and through, that is one dish I haven't been able to wrap my taste buds around. It is a texture thing, I'm sure.

Your lunch sounded lovely. Pat, congrats to the grandson.
Off to clean the mess, who dropped the bomb in my kitchen....there are pots everywhere.

Laurie - You should save up for a Kitchen Aid! It's the best. I'm minus the breadmaker, but have TWO Kitchen Aid's!!
Tina - I'm glad the park was nice, but sorry there was a meltdown. I have about 4 variations on the smothered pork chops, this one is my quicker version. My beau was working on landscaping all day - had a little breakfast and skipped lunch. So, he was starving and I needed to get it on the table quickly! I make another version that sounds quite a bit like yours. So fantastic, right?
I don't feel so bad about the disappearing breadmaker, at least I'm not the only one! I'll bet that pressure cooker and fry basket are hiding somewhere! You'll find them when you least expect it. Sounds like you were quite productive today - lots of great food coming out of your kitchen.

Brooke, color me envious with two Kitchen Aide's. Lucky woman. My sister got my mom's when she passed away.

I have gone through every kitchen cabinet and the pressure cooker is gone. Where would I have put a pressure cooker? I could understand selling something at a yard sale that I didn't use much, but I use the pressure cooker all the time in the fall and winter to make bean soups? It's making me crazy. Sis called and told me the fryer basket is at her house...guess I never took it home last year, so that explains that mystery.

Recipes are only a starting points and like musicians, we can add a personal interpretation, a recipe riff, I suppose. Variety is the "spice of life" don't you think? .I like the idea of melting cheese on the smothered chops and can't wait to give that version a whirl. Mr. Fred would be a happy camper. He is rummaging for cookies that I didn't bake today. His time clock is completely backwards. It's gonna be a long night.

I see.. well I have some friends who are in their 20's & on that have that mentality too. It's worrisome but hopefully she'll figure it out - she will! (I hope they will, too!) and just having a caring, supportive mother like you to talk to makes a big difference.

love the Greek Diner featured now..

Me too....ditto on the Greek diner. Love good diners. I have a list of places Guy should visit here.

Liv is smart but has such self-esteem issues. All I can do is hold my tongue when I can and be there when for her when she needs to talk. If I protest too strongly, the forbidden becomes more attractive. It is keeping my mouth shut that is hardest. She is our baby, afterall.

You're doing great. Parenting is a tough job and I didn't really appreciate it until I was out of my teens.. No kids yet for me! Still figuring things out @ 26.

    Goodnight!

Thanks everyone for the wonderful welcome!

I hope everyone enjoys their extra hour of sleep...I'm at work tonight (I work as a unit clerk in a busy emergency department), about 45 minutes ago I watched the clock on my computer turn from 01:59 to 01:00...would much rather have been in bed then see that...oh well, such is life!

I've got a quiet Sunday planned...my nephew Nicholas' 5th birthday party at 1...reptile themed party, complete with a reptile show...lizards, tarantulas and pythons OH MY!!!!
Then home to a very quiet house...no football this Sunday! Boyfriend (Dan) and my son (Tyler) are going to Toronto for Bills/Bears game...GO BEARS!!!

So looking forward to some Luci time!!!

    Have a great Sunday.......
    Luci

Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.
