How to make it

  • In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Pour the buttermilk into a separate bowl and season with sal and pepper. Dip the tomatoes in the buttermilk and ten dredge them in the cornmeal mixture, coating both sides well.
  • Please a large skillet over medium heat and coat with oil. When the oil is hot, pan-fry the tomatoes until golden brown and crispy on both sides. Carefully remove the tomatoes and drain. Serve with hot pepper sauce.
  • Personal note: These are delicious with sunny-side eggs and biscuits.

I looked over your fried green tomato and BLT combo. It really looks good Keni. Will have to remember to give that one a shot this weekend. Thanks.

Don't worry, clandestine, I'm only teasing one of my favoritist GR friends...whom I adore and respect greatly...who also has a sense of humor, and, somehow, "gets" mine! :) Lucky me! :)

Thanks for the support Clandestine, but Keni was just directing me to her previous recipe. (which, I might add, could use a bit of garlic powder).

No Keni, I didn't see your recipe. But will look for it. As noted, credit was given to Tyler Florence - and I tried looking through the very, very long list of Fried green tomatoes to see if there was a dupe on here - but couldn't find one. The key ingredient here is garlic powder. I'll lokk over that "lil southern gals" recipes to see if it is even close to the flavors of tis one ;-)

Take care Keni. Good to see you stirring up trouble 8-)

You're right Chic. That would make a huge difference. I had to use olive oil this morning :-(
But, I also overbrowned the biscuits - so there was a nice flavor enhancer there ;-)

LOVE those fried green tomatoes....add some good silver queen corn, MD fried chicken...a sure Eastern shore tantalizing delight! Only change I would make is frying up those tomatoes in bacon grease! Yum.
