Ingredients

How to make it

  • Cut head of lettuce in half and soak in water to cover, for 1/2 hour. Drain and cut as for cole slaw. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup sugar. Let stand for 1/2 hour.
  • Slice up 1 onion, very thinly, and add to lettuce.
  • Cut up 3 strips bacon and fry, leaving drippings in pan. Add 1/3 cup vinegar and 2/3 cup water to bacon and bring to a boil.
  • Pour over lettuce. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately.

Sounds like a variation of the wilted lettuce salads that I love - have to try it this way. Thank you for sharing this family recipe!
