Sweet And Sour German Lettuce Recipe
This is an old German recipe passed down in my husband's family. Great with pot roast, hot chicken dishes, and NE boiled dinners.

Ingredients
  • 1 head Iceberg lettuce
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 strips bacon
  • 1/3 cup vinegar
  • 2/3 cup water
  • salt and pepper to taste.

Directions
  1. Cut head of lettuce in half and soak in water to cover, for 1/2 hour. Drain and cut as for cole slaw. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup sugar. Let stand for 1/2 hour.
  2. Slice up 1 onion, very thinly, and add to lettuce.
  3. Cut up 3 strips bacon and fry, leaving drippings in pan. Add 1/3 cup vinegar and 2/3 cup water to bacon and bring to a boil.
  4. Pour over lettuce. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately.
