A layered salad for special occasions. Can be prepared ahead. It perks up when chilled overnight.

I made this one last year for my husband's family reunion. Most liked it. My sister in Florida had made it for me one Christmas while I was down visiting. It's really good and an eye pleasing salad. I think Southerner's enjoy this type of salad more than most.

Interesting, do you know where your sister found it? My wife's mother got it from a Nazarene Community cookbook some 30-40 years ago. It is our traditional Easter salad for the family. We've tweaked it a little but not much. For a vegetarian version we put Chinese Noodles on top instead of bacon.

My sister got it from a cookbook of my Grandmother's. "No-Creek Baptist Church Cookbook." (That's back in Ky.) It's around 30 - 35 years old. My sister makes it every Christmas. I always use bacon...true KY. girl I am!!

LOL, it must be a "church social recipe". Bring it to the pot luck supper... For us it's Easter salad. Christmas is Waldorf Salad. I'll have to post that one too. Hmm maybe I did. I've got enough out there now that I can't keep track. :]

I was just getting ready to post a favorite layered salad and thought I had better check if there was anything comparable before hand. My layered salad is actually different than yours as my dressing has mayonnaise, sour cream, Dijon mustard, and onions. Mine has peas too but also has hard cooked eggs sliced, thin strips of ham and Monterey Jack cheese. I traditionally made this particular dish in the spring and summer when I was celebrating family birthdays.

Debra, go ahead and please post it. There is more than one way to skin a cat and more than one way to make a layered salad. From the sounds of it I'd like to try yours. :]

This sounds very interesting and I`ll certainly have a go. Certainly a new flavour to a salad, which can be a bit ordinary at times. Thanks

This is a family favorite. I managed to misplace my file for it and my mom wanted me to make it for her birthday this Sunday. We add water chestnuts to the mix, too. Thanks, dugger!

Wow, I saved Mom's birthday. I am humbled. Naah, I haven't learned humble yet. :] But I am certainly glad to hear that in some small way I helped with your quandary.

I love this recipe and put it in my saved file. We used to get this when our bridge group would meet and we would devour it. Thanks

My grandmother used to make this and I was happy to find a recipe that did her memory proud. Thanks for bringing me back to my childhood!

Seems like so many of us had a similar piece of history in this salad. This is one of those things that makes it worth putting old family traditions on the site. And for once I'm not being a smart azz...

I got this recipe from my daughter. She made it for one of our Thanksgiving dinners. I was wondering if you could substitute the peas for maybe some kind of bean that would also work. Just wondering. LOL
I remember one in my family setting aside all of the peas, but loved the salad.

Recipes are pallets for people to paint on. Of course you can substitute if you family does not like peas. Some of my family pick them out too. Try chick peas, or red beans, or anything else they like. Don't expect me to know all the answers because it is a personal preference. Pick you poison.

I could eat my weight in SLS!! This is just a bit different from mine in that I use hard boiled eggs, green pepper and in the dressing, I put parmesan cheese, sugar and mayo.
Great one!

LOL, there must be 2 million layered salad recipes out there. The point is that because of the many ingredients available it can be almost anything you like. We've done it for vegetarian friends using Oriental Noodles as a topping instead of bacon. The variations are endless.

Glad you liked it. It's a tradition at our house like similar recipes are at many others. I guess the basic good stuff is just good stuff.. :)

I took this to our condo potluck dinner and they scarfed it up. I was hoping to have some left for my lunch the next day. Very good and it is nice it can be made the day before.

I LOVE this salad, it is a family favorite, however, we add Lowery's season salt to the mayo and sugar. We also add a layer of water chestnuts, and our peas are thawed. We do not add the bacon until we are ready to serve, then also add (3) chopped up hard boiled eggs and two diced up tomatoes. Yum...
