Ingredients

How to make it

  • Cook sugar and water until threads (not sure what this means)
  • Beat egg whites until stiff.
  • Pour syrup over egg whites, continuing to beat until cool.
  • Add beaten egg yolks and extract.
  • Sift flour, salt, cream of tartar together 6 times.
  • Fold in quickly.
  • Pour into a ungreased tube pan.
  • Bake in a slow over 325 degrees for one hour.
  • Turn upside down.
  • Allow to cool.
  • Cut from Pan.

    My Mom used to make a similar cake and I was able to get the recipe. I have passed it on to other family members and friends. It is so fine. Thanks for posting your recipe.

    I'm so glad you posted this, Zena...we can not lose these wonderful old recipes of our mothers, grandmothers, great-aunts and every other family member who loved to cook. I have printed this off so I don't forget it - the cake sounds devine!

    Zena, I learned from my mother about "threads". You dip a spoon into the boiling sugar/water, then hold the spoon up, and when the mixture drops from the spoon it resembles a thread. ONLY if the mixture has cooked long enough, will the dropping liquid look like a thread. That is called "spinning a thread" or "threads". I have a candy recipe that is like this. Hope I have explained it clearly. :) And I love the recipe!
