Ingredients
  • 1 cup course ground yellow harina (I like No. 16 grind)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼-½ tsp ground black pepper.
  • 1½ cups grated extra sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 Tbsp butter (lightly salted is OK)
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2 lbs shrimp, 16-20 count, peeled and de-veined
  • ½ cup sweet onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp parsley, chopped
  • salt and black pepper to taste

Directions
  1. Note: I like to use very coarsely ground yellow harina in place of hominy grits. You can use hominy grits or quick grits in this recipe.
  2. Place 1 cup harina and 4 cups cold water in a large, heavy sauce pan, add 1 tsp salt and ¼-½ tsp ground black pepper.
  3. Heat on medium high to a rapid boil.
  4. Reduce heat and simmer until thick. Stir frequently to avoid sticking.
  5. Add grated cheese to hot grits and stir vigorously until cheese is melted and grits appear creamy.
  6. Prepare shrimp while grits are cooking.
  7. Place olive oil and butter in a heavy skillet and heat on medium until butter sizzles.
  8. Add onion and sauté until tender.
  9. Add shrimp, garlic and parsley. Season the shrimp with salt and black pepper.
  10. Sauté until shrimp just turn pink. Remove from heat and drain excess grease.
  11. When grits and cheese are complete, add prepared shrimp to the pot and mix.
  12. Serve hot with buttered cornbread muffins.
  13. Note: For an added treat, slice 1 lb of hot smoked sausage and sauté with shrimp. Be sure to drain the extra grease added by the sausage before mixing with grits.

Love shrimp and grits!!!!!

I always make mine with a sauce or gravy - I'll have to give this a try. I also love the idea of sausage.... I bet bacon would be nice too.

I have been looking for a good S & G recipe. There is a restaurant in Charleston, SC that has a "dirty grits" recipe. This looks close. Can't wait to try it. Thanks.

Oh my, oh yes, oh, oh I can't wait to try this. It's a Keeper, for sure and I only keep 5's

I'm not southern, but I LOVE my shrimp n grits! Tried them my first trip to SC 3 years ago and have been addicted ever since. I've even been transformed into craving cheese grits for breakfast! Sounds great. Thanks.
