Ingredients
  • 3 or more vanilla bean pods, halved
  • 2 cups vodka or light rum

Directions
  1. Choose a clean glass container with a stopper. I save clear glass wine bottles with screw tops that have a distinctive shape and run them through the dishwasher.
  2. Put the beans in the bottle and pour in enough vodka or rum to cover the beans.
  3. Cover securely and set aside for about 2 weeks, shaking occasionally. When the liquid is dark brown and fragrant, it's ready to use.

Hi! Thanks for this, I use a lot of vanilla extract in my cakes. How long does it last once made?

Halleluia, I couldn't understand why vanilla extract was costing so much. Now I can see! Thanks for the post!

I am always running out of vanilla, thanx....
I was wondering, do you cut the vanilla in half crosswise or lengthwise?
