How to make it

  • Place the milk, water, and salt into a sauce pan over medium heat and bring to a boil.
  • Once the milk, salt and water comes to a boil, gradually add the cornmeal while vigorously whisking.
  • Once all of the cornmeal has been incorporated, decrease the heat to low and cover.
  • Remove lid and whisk every few minutes, to prevent grits from sticking.
  • Cook for 20 to 25 minutes or until mixture is creamy and smooth.
  • Remove from the heat, add the pepper and butter, and whisk to combine. Once the butter is melted, gradually whisk in the cheese a little at a time. Serve immediately.I
  • **f you wait too long the grits can become like plastic.** :)

    Yes, yes, and yes! Lots of freshly ground black pepper gives such a deep wonderful taste with all that butter and cheese! Yum. :)
