Ingredients
  • 2 large onions
  • 2 carrots (or one large)
  • 4 TBSP butter (yes,rich, satisfying, natural butter  )
  • 1 bay leave
  • 1 litre vegetable broth
  • 150 gr brown lentils
  • 500 g potatoes (those you’d use for mashed potatoes, sort of floury texture)
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • 400 gr chicken breast
  • 1 to 2 TBSP Garam masala (a spice mixture your get in asian shops, containing coriander, kreuzkümmel, peppercorns cardamom, cinnamon and cloves, if you cannot get it, you may want to use curry powder)
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp. chilipowder or chopped fresh red chilli
  • Salt, pepper
  • If your like Koriander, then
  • 1 – 2 TBSP chopped fresh coriander leaves for decoration

Directions
  1. Peel and dice onion
  2. Peel and dice carrot
  3. In large pot, heat 1 TBSP butter, stir in carrot and about 1/3 of the onions untl onions are ‘glassy’
  4. Add bay leave and vegetable broth
  5. Add lentils, cover, cook for approx. 30 min. at low hwat.
  6. Meantime (I like to have a glass of chilled white wine at this stage, it is not necessary for the success of the recipe, though  )
  7. Wash, peel potatoes, cut into cubes, not too small,, about 2 cm side length (heavens, this is difficult to write down  )
  8. Using 1 TBSP butter, stir in the 2/3 of onions, until glassy
  9. Sprinkle with mustard powder
  10. Stir until evenly covered
  11. Add to the lentils – or the other way round – into whichever pot is the largest.
  12. Cook another 10 to 20 minutes or until both lentils and potatoes are almost soft
  13. Wash chicken breast, pat dry, cut into cubes.
  14. Heat remaining 1 TBSP butter to fry chicken at medium heat, turning with spatula
  15. Throw into pot with the potato/lentil mixture
  16. (yes, you are using a lot of pots for this simple dish. But, what the heck, you’ve either got a dishwasher or a husband who’ll gladly do the pots for you 
  17. Now, season the mixture with Garam massala, cinnamon, chilli, pepper and salt.
  18. Before serving, sprinkle with chopped coriander leaves.
  19. I like to drink a yoghurt drink with this:
  20. Put into blender plain yoghurt, some salt and ice-water,
  21. Turn on blender – pour into glasses.
  22. Simple, but really good with this meal. Trust me 

Sounds good. I'm browsing around looking for something different for dinner. Love your humorus add-ins!

Sounds delicious and great, Renate - thanks so much!

I think this recipe looks delicious I cant wait to try it,I love both potatoes and lentils.

This looks delicious and warming for those drizzly, grey spring days we're about to get. Is "kreuzkuemmel" cumin? There are 2 kinds of cumin in garam masala, apparently, for those who are trying to make their own blend at home: regular (red) and black cumin. One recipe I saw added ginger and cloves, too. I have some of the stuff, which seems to be the kind with ginger and cloves. It smells so good, so I am glad that you have introduced something new in which to use it. I guess I'll be making this soup sans chicken, but I'm sure it will still be awesome!

At this address, one can buy garam masala if they don't know where to find an Asian shop nearby! Now you've inspired me to use some experimentally when I cook... I'll let you if I concoct anything wonderful :)

This sounds great. I'm bookmarking it!
