These buns aren't anything like those yucky buns from the supermarket. They are both beautiful and take the hamburger to new heights. Can also be formed into hot dog buns. Great for sandwiches, also

Ingredients
  • 2 pkgs dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2/3 cup dry milk
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup shortening or lard
  • 4 tbs sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 5 cups (about) Bread Flour * 2 cups could be whole wheat

Directions
  1. Proof yeast with sugar in 100 degree water. Add dry milk, salt, shortening, egg and about four cups flour. Knead. If kneading by hand, keep adding flour until dough is pliable. If by mixer, use dough hook and add flour until dough pulls away cleanly from bowl. Knead until a gofl ball size piece can be stretched without breaking. Place in greased bowl and let rise until doubled.
  2. Punch down and place on floured cutting board and with hands form into a log. Divide in half and then divide each half into eight equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball with the palm of your hands and flatten into a three inch diameter circle. Place on greased baking sheet, cover lightly and let rise until doubled. Place in 400 degree oven and bake until lightly browned on top and bottom.

Thanks for this one! No matter how good the hamburger and toppings are, it just dissappoints me when the roll isn't good. Ruins the whole meal.

My first try at buns. Turned out very well.

I use to have good recipe for hamburger buns, but was lost yrs ago in a fire, thanks so much for this recipe, can't wait to try them.

I can't wait to try these buns...I'm going to pair them with one of Borius' Guac Burgers. Thank you so much! =)

How do you get them brown like the picture?

Made hotdog buns this time. Recipe still turned out good.

For klaus...
a step that was omitted was brushing the tops with a mixture of egg and a little water just before baking.
this will create the beautiful glossy brown color.

To Terigo: The egg and water is called egg wash, but adding this will make the top crusty, which is okay if that is what you want. Most hamburger buns, however, are soft.
