How to make it

  • Grease three 14-oz cans and put a large kettle of water on to boil.
  • Sift flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl.
  • Beat together milk, eggs, zest, honey, butter and poppy seeds.
  • Pour mixture into dry ingredients, beat well.
  • Fill cans 3/4 the way full and cover tightly with foil.
  • Set on a rack in a large pot., and pour boiling water 1/3 of the way up the cans.
  • Bring water back up to a gentle boil, cover pot and steam 2 hours.
  • Cool 10 minutes in cans before turning out onto a rack to cool completely.

    sounds like fun--I've never steamed bread. I remember loving the boston bread in the cans at grocery store!
