Ingredients

How to make it

  • Toast the bread medium dark.
  • Butter very well.
  • Tear into chunks.
  • Sprinkle with lots of black pepper and enough salt to make you happy.
  • Pour over hot milk. Soak a minute or two.
  • Grab a big old soup spoon and eat.
  • You want to see little dots of butter floating in the milk, then you know you have it just right.
  • “Good bread is the most fundamentally satisfying of all foods; and good bread with fresh butter, the greatest of feasts.”
  • James Beard (1903-1985)

This was my Mother's cure to everything that ailed you! Thanks for the memories. I never was a fan of it when I was younger but now that I am of an age - I just might appreciate it!

Great! Yours is the salt and pepper version and mine is the cinnamon and raisin version! I think we've got it covered, eh?

My Mother made this for me when I was young, and I still make it and really enjoy, I have never heard of it as a cure for hangovers, I leave my toast slices whole and just dip them in the buttered milk and pour any leftover milk over them.

    Great recipe, Thanks, LeRoy

I was too young to have a hangover when I first experienced this dish. But let me tell you, it sounds weird but there is something to be said about how comforting hot buttered milk on crunchy toast becomes something else altogether different. Kind of a hot milk soup thickened with a good bread and lots of pepper. It cures what ails you, deep in the soul.
