How to make it

  • Mix meat, crumbs, onion, egg, salt, ginger & milk.
  • Shape mixture by rounded tablespoonfuls into balls.
  • Melt shortening in large skillet; brown & cook meatballs.
  • Remove meatballs; keep warm.
  • Pour fat from skillet.
  • Mix cornstarch & sugar. Stir in reserved pineapple syrup, vinegar & soy sauce till smooth.
  • Pour into skillet; cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens & boils.
  • Boil & stir 1 minute.
  • Add meatballs, pineapple tidbits & green pepper; heat through.
  • Stir meatballs & sauce together; serve warm.

    Just discovered this and it's a terrific recipie! I made one change: I used crushed pineapple instead of tidbits (I didn't want to run out to the store!) It made the sauce thicker, and the pineapple stuck to the meatballs better. Really enhanced the pineapple flavor. These are Hawaiian meatballs, after all!

    This was SOOOOO delicious! I added a clove of garlic to the meat, otherwise followed it directly. GREAT hit for dinner. Served it with coconut rice! 5 forks!

    I used to bring a version of this in a crock pot to pot luck Fridays at work. There never was any left. It's great stuff!!
